Lo studio appropriato all’uomo è l’uomo – Alexander Pope

Dunque, conosci te stesso, non avere la presunzione di scrutare Dio;
Posto su quest’istmo di una condizione media,
Essere oscuramente saggio e rozzamente grande,
Fra troppa conoscenza, secondo gli scettici,
Fra troppa debolezza, secondo l’orgoglio stoico,
Egli è sospeso; in dubbio se agire od oziare,
In dubbio se stimare se stesso un dio o un bruto,
In dubbio se preferire la sua mente o il suo corpo;
Nato solo per morire, non ragiona che per errare;
Simile all’ignoranza è la sua ragione,
Sia ch’egli pensi troppo o troppo poco:
Un caos di pensiero e azione confusi;
Da sé ingannato o disingannato, pure;
Creato a metà per sollevarsi, a metà per cadere,
Gran signore di tutte le cose e tuttavia di tutte preda,
Solo giudice del vero, lanciato in un infinito errare:
Onore, zimbello ed enigma del mondo!

The Proper Study of Mankind

Know then thyself, presume not God to scan;
The proper study of Mankind is Man.
Plac’d on this isthmus of a middle state,
A being darkly wise, and rudely great:
With too much knowledge for the Sceptic side,
With too much weakness for the Stoic’s pride,
He hangs between; in doubt to act, or rest,
In doubt to deem himself a God, or Beast;
In doubt his Mind or Body to prefer,
Born but to die, and reas’ning but to err;
Alike in ignorance, his reason such,
Whether he thinks too little, or too much:
Chaos of Thought and Passion, all confus’d;
Still by himself abus’d, or disabus’d;
Created half to rise, and half to fall;
Great lord of all things, yet a prey to all;
Sole judge of Truth, in endless error hurl’d:
The glory, jest, and riddle of the world!
